<p>This was a good read, though not necessarily game-changing. </p>
<p>Depending on the reader’s current level of understanding of biases, environmental influence on character, and the morality of the tribe, it may or may not be significantly enlightening. Or it may just give you some useful new and helpful graphical metaphors for what you already knew intuitively. The work is ambitious in its claims, but it doesn’t really deliver any new solutions to the problem. </p>
<p>He does a good job of explaining how most people approach their morality from a place of trying to help society, just in different ways, according to different moral matrices built along six common axes, each weighted differently in different tribes; and he does a good job of explaining how our intuition acts first and our strategic reasoning actually creates arguments to serve our intuition. But he doesn’t really provide any new answers to getting the two sides to work together, other than “learn more about each other, make closer friendships, and try harder to find common ground”. </p>
<p>Well .. duh. </p>
<p>But the ideas of the elephant and the rider (or the horse and the rider for the cowboys among us), the moral brain being like a tongue with six taste buds, and the idea that we are 90% chimp (individualist) but 10% bee (hive mind) and that there is a “hive switch” in each of us that can be activated … Those are useful tools. </p>
<p>If you have time to kill, it’s a fine read, but I wouldn’t go out of your way unless you just enjoy this kind of stuff.</p>

<p>Just finished this book. It’s a good read, I recommend it. The author is a retired Navy admiral, a decorated seal and Commander of US special operations forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. The code he presents focuses on familiar themes, courage, integrity, service, forgiveness, and is accompanied by personal tales from McRaven’s time in the service as well as other historical anecdotes that are relevant and reinforced the point. A good addition to any library on warrior culture, public service, warrior codes such as bushido or chivalry, ethics, and virtue.</p>
<p>This is one of my earlier reviews and as such is very short. Here’s some bonus content, of Admiral McRaven’s famous “Make your Bed” speech.</p>

<p>This was a fascinating read. I knew the for-profit prison industry was crooked but I had no idea how far back the history of the industry went, which commercial and political figures were instrumental in it’s founding, and how it connected to other important historical events such as the abolition of chattel slavery, the great depression and sharecropping, chain gangs, and a whole host of other things. The author goes undercover in a private prison in Louisiana for several months and records the events, and interweaves history throughout. I wish the history had included more references to the history of the industry in the north and the west; the author unintentionally paints the picture that this is only a southern problem, which isn’t accurate. But I think he does his best to provide an honest unbiased account of the situation.</p>
<p>Make no mistake: slavery - that is, profiting off of the captivity and labor of humans against their will - is alive and well across the world and in the United States. It takes many forms, from sex trafficking, indebted servitude, to wage slavery, to incarceration for profit. It is one part of a complex web of commercial and political alliances, and a pipeline that locks neighborhoods, families, schools, prisons, and cultures into cycles that are very difficult to break. In many cases, good intentions got us here; for example penitentiaries were first created to avoid branding, whipping or hanging for various offenses, instead hoping to rehabilitate inmates by serving their penance. But good intentions are not immune to corruption by greed and power, and here we are.</p>
<p>It is not a short book, and it is not for the squeamish - it contains graphic depictions of many kinds of violence and sexual assault. (Though, to be honest, it is much more tame than other prison accounts.) But if you have time and want to better understand the mess we are in, I think it is a useful book and I do recommend it.</p>
<p>It is also a good inspiration for prayer. Pray for those who are incarcerated; for those who stand guard over them; for those in charge who perpetuate this system; and for those of us who stand by and watch it’s effects. Pray for all of it. Because it is only God’s love that can set our hearts right, help us to properly balance justice and mercy, and help us find the way out of this mess</p>

<p>Just finished this book, and I think I will go back to it again later. The central idea is that modern Christians have become far too much like the old Pharisees, we spend too much time judging and separating ourselves from the ones that we are supposed to be loving and fellowshipping with. The modern Christian is compared to Jesus, who is our ultimate example, and found lacking, in many cases found to have completely missed the point. Much like the last book I reviewed, Radical by David Platt, the book calls us to make imitating Christ our first and most important habit; in the company we keep, how we love each other, how we relate to God, and how we evangelize. If you love Jesus and are frustrated by so many of the words and actions or lack thereof by those who take His name in vain, this book will be a motivating refreshment.</p>

<p>I just finished this book, “live not by lies” by Rod Dreher. I highly recommend it to both my religious friends and my secular liberal friends. Especially those who think they know about the history of communist and socialist oppression, because you may be surprised at what you didn’t know, especially in regards to the church.</p>
<p>The book tells some remarkable stories about the persecution of the Christian church under totalitarian regimes in the 20th century. It uses these stories to explain how totalitarianism affects not only the political landscape but the religious landscape of a Nation. These stories explain how these regimes must be resisted by Christians in particular, and how Christians will become a target of these totalitarian regimes because Christianity and these regimes are entirely incompatible and the regine must exterminate the church in order to complete the transformation of the people. It also stresses the importance of church cooperation across denominational lines and even the importance of encouraging fellowship beyond the church as fellowship itself is a tool to resist these regimes. </p>
<p>It talks about hard totalitarianism versus soft totalitarianism, explains that the modern West is suffering from soft totalitarianism, and explains how the consequences will be no less dire if it is not resisted. It talks about courage, faith, love, service, and justice in the face of great personal cost and the great liberation that comes from loving and following Christ in the darkest times of your life and in the most cruel affairs of the world. </p>
<p>This one should have a spot on the bookshelf of anyone who rejects totalitarian rule, and especially those who are faithful.</p>
