This is a record not only of the Church, but of Western society - the two are, as you understand once reading this volume, inseparable.

AT LAST, IT IS FINISHED. 46 hours later!

First, I learned a lot from this book. But I also learned a lot about the author’s opinions. The information is significantly more rich in depth in the first thousand years of church history; as it moves into the second millennium, especially the reformation, I find that the material gets thin. Perhaps it must, since the church has become so broad and varied by that time. I definitely came away from this book with more questions than answers - but in a good way; I am inspired to learn more about certain segments of church history.

But mostly, I have to be honest, I’m exhausted by this book. And it’s not necessarily the author’s fault - there’s just SO MUCH HERE. About halfway through, it was less about learning, and more about persevering and defeating the book. I couldn’t let this text beat me - I had to see it through to the end. At times it became a real slog. The author and the content are both generally engaging, but the way he jumps around through the timeline can be confusing. And there are definitely parts that are more boring than others, but that may just be me. I realize I will honestly have to go through this book several times to actually retain all the information; there’s just so much, and I spent so much time focused on finishing rather than retaining, that I think it’s inevitable.

Overall if you find a copy of this I’d snatch it up. It isn’t complete (and, after listening to it, I understand why - the history of the western world IS the history of the church, and vice versa, so you can’t fit it all into one volume) - but it is sufficiently complete to form a basis of understanding of major events, key players, repeating themes and conflicts in the history of the faith that has literally shaped the history of the world for the last two thousand years.

8/10, would recommend. But beware - this is a marathon, not a sprint.

“How Should We Then Live” attempts to summarize how Western society arrived at the pickle we’re in, using the lense of the development of Western thought and philosophy. It does an okay job, but fails to provide any substantial suggestion for how to resolve it. The core premise of the book is that “Man, beginning from himself and proceeding only with himself, can never achieve anything like lasting peace or happiness.”

The journey begins at and passes through the Greek philosophers, how that thought dominated through the early church, which came to dominate western society and to create a society with freedoms intertwined with charitable ideas and semi-righteous laws; the rise of humanism and its infiltration of that same church and society, and its eventual hollowing out of the structures that had been created. It follows through the reformation where the authors obvious explicit protestant bias shows in vivid colors (which to me invalidate some of the scholarly character of the work), but he does make good points about how protestantism was a rejection of humanism in the church. I think “Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years” provides a much better education on this series of events, though many readers might get lost in the sauce with that volume, so opting for this one is okay. Just be aware yoiu’re getting a very brief overview of a very large swath of history that is really only being presented to set up the rest of the points further in the book.

The book’s serious contributions, I think, don’t begin until chapter 6. The author makes a valiant fight against the idea that protestant reformers hated art, going to great lengths to show how much the arts flourished in the lives and hearts of various reformers. The author makes a very strong case for the idea that the American, French and English revolutions could never have occurred had it not been for protestantism, something that seems obvious in hindsight but which I never really considered until now. He draws parallels between the Amerrican revolution andn the “bloodless revolution” in England as similar, while pointing out the incredible difference in the French revolution that followed, which contradicts a common idea that the American and French revolution were similar. Through his lense, they’re wildly different, the French revolution being a product of the romantics and humanists, devoid of the core structures that provided the ethical frameworks of the American and English revolutions. He carries this chain through to the various totalitarian regimes, illustrating how their attempts to produce utopian society without love for God at the center ultimately lead to destruction and misery. But all this has been covered before - “LIve Not by Lies” gives a better treatmnent, I think, though the one presented here is probably more approachable for some people.

The most impressive contribution of this book, I think, is between chapters 7 and 10 where the author discusses the history of the modern sciences, and makes the case that it would not have been possible for modern science to exist without the framework of Christianity. Not just talking about the funding provided by the Roman Catholic Church, but rather the entire worldview provided by the Christian faith that says the world was created by a rational God who presented his work (which adheres to His specific laws) to be investigated and discovered and brought under dominion by man, His special creation. He references numerous famous scientists who, even if they were not Christians themselves, openly admit that the Christian worldview enabled the very scientific process through which they operated, because it provides for the idea of (among other things) absolute truth which can be discovered. He proceeds to discuss the development of the cult of science, the new priesthood, and what has happened to science now that the Christian worldview has been replaced - how you no longer have a body that is good at producing revelations based on observation (of course there are some who still do - but we’re speaking broadly here), but rathher you get a field where you excel at deriving whatever conclusion you wwanted to get in thef irst place from the data you gather to support whatever social statement you want to make. This is an important topic that I don’t think gets talked about enough: the corruption of the sciences by a new psudo-scientific cult who idolize “the science” without actually loving the scientific method and without accepting the source of objective truth, God himself.

The frustrating thing, to me, is that the author never answers the title of the book: How shall we then live? He does answer it, in a certain way, but it is (to me) altogether unsatisfactory. I was hoping to see some concrete examples of how to reject modernity and adhere better to the tenets of the Christian faith in the modern world, but all we get is “Accept the Bible as the ultimate source of truth and live the way Jesus said”. And really, “Accept the Bible as the ultimate source of truth” is the bigger thrust. I mean … The author isn’t wrong. But did we really need to read 12 chapters to be told that? Perhaps someone who is less entrenched in their faith will have a revelation, and this will be useful to them, but for me this was kind of a “Well, duh” moment, without a lot of additional substance I was looking for. As the author is fond of saying throughout the book, “the particulars” were not well served.

Overall it’s a decent read. If you have a chance to pick it up from your library, give it a go, but I doubt I’d pay cover price for it.

Finished this one yesterday. I’ve read a lot of really dense stuff this year, and especially after “Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years”, my mind was just about shot. I needed some easy listening - even something funny.

“If you didn’t bring jerky, what did I just eat?” by Bill Heavey was a fantastic relief. Written by one of the authors frequently featured in Field & Stream magazine, this collection of anecdotes about hunting, fishing, and life in general, was delightful. The stories were short, with a few that were strung together into longer series, but it was always easy to pick up and put down without worrying you were going to forget what was going on. The stories are engaging, the writing is great, and the narration was colorful; I didn’t want to stop listening.

Heavey is a fantastic storyteller, an everyman who invites the average listener to take part in the stories - most of us can sympathize with being average (at best) hunters, average (at best) fisherman, average (at best) fathers and husbands, but Heavey is such a lovabale galoot that he inspires and gives the rest of us hope. But the introduction to the book contains a warning - his stories can run the gamut from funny, to heartwarming, to tragic, and Heavey’s storytelling talents allow him to swing between moods quickly, without warning, taking you along for the ride. More than once, I would go quickly from laughing to wondering who in the world was cutting all these onions in my truck?!

If it wasn’t jerky, I don’t know what it was - but I liked it, and I’m going to go get some more of it. 10/10, if you’re an outdoorsman, a father, or know someone who is, this one is worth every penny. I’m probably going to buy a print copy and circulate it amongst my close male friends.

It’s important to understand who the author was. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a Lutheran pastor in Germany. Born 1906, he was one of the founding members of the Confessing Church in the mid 1930s, and afterward he wrote this book in 1937. From day one he was an outspoken dissident against the Nazis, their euthanasia program and genocidal persecutions. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1945, imprisoned at Tegerl Prision for 1.5 years, and later hanged at Flossenburg concentration camp in 1945.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a man fully acquainted with the cost of discipleship, and I feel he is (as select few others in history are) uniquely qualified to have penned a volume like this.

All that being said, I can sum up the cost of discipleship: everything. All you have ever had, known, or loved. Everything you will ever be promised in this world, all your potential gains and pleasures. All of it. The cost of discipleship is to lay all of your earthly being at the feet of Christ, at the foot of the cross, and to give it all up in exchange for the gift of God’s mercy and grace, and to live a life of total devotion to God in Christ, wherever that may lead you.

It’s a path few can walk. I openly admit I fail in it daily. I look around me and consider all the things I cherish too dearly to do some of the crazier things I can imagine doing as a Chrisitian; my family which I love, my home where I find comfort and constance, my job where I find the means to sustain myself and do good works in the name of God. My various worldly possessions with their utilitarian purposes so essential for daily life. I say that God will provide, that he will clothe His believers more gloriously than the lilies of the field, that He will feed us our fill daily if we rely on Him, and yet there are so many things that I do not do. And I think it is because I, like many other Christians, are not willing to pay the full cost of discipleship.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer paid the ultimate price for his beliefs and his stand against earthly tyranny. He knew the cost of discipleship. But in a way, it is easier to die for your faith than to live for it. You die, once, and you’re done. I’m by no means discounting his faith or his sacrifice. What I’m saying is that it’s easy for us to idolize the one-time glorious sacrifice of the martyr while being unwilling to daily crucify our flesh, pick up our cross, and follow Him wherever He may lead. And that is the cost of discipleship.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much going into this book. As a white male in the south, I’m used to getting beaten over the head about racism and slavery and the way things were. I’m used to those beatings having no nuance, no subtlety, and no appreciation of all sides of history, and just focusing on the one single side where the beating was coming from that day. And since the recommendation came from someone who said they read the book when they were in school, I was expecting a particularly juvenile and simplistic version of that beating.

I’m happy to report that Copper Sun defied my expectations in most regards. Copper Sun follows the story of Amari, from her village in Africa where she lives, through her capture by other tribesmen and european slave traders, to her sale to an English plantation owner, to her escape and her eventual arrival at newfound freedom. It tells the story of how other tribes in Africa took part in the capture and sale of slaves for their own benefit, even among tribes who had been friendly and had good trade relations. It tells the story of being aboard a slave ship for months, and the terrors that occurred there, but shows moments of kindness and mercy from unlikely places. It tells of how she met Polly, a young white girl who was also a slave, though under a different name - an indentured servant, a person who is enslaved for a debt, in this case an unfair debt inherited from her parents. The story follows the two as they come to know and respect each other, each moving past their initial prejudices to form new relationships. It speaks of the brutality of some slave masters, and the gentility of others, while acknowledging the grand injustice that slaves they all still were. It tells the story of masters sexually abusing slaves, and of slaves falling in love with masters - and the tragedy that came from both. It tells of desperate bids for freedom, and help that comes from the most unlikely of places. It showcases the many different kinds of people you would find on the early American frontier - at least, within the European scope - and tells of how some spirits would never truly succumb to slavery, while others would be thoroughly broken by it.

Copper Sun definitely uses plenty of stereotypes, but I don’t think they were egregious or damaging to anyone or to the story. Like I say, stereotypes exist for a reason. But even the stereotyped characters had some good depth to them, and one of the antagonists, Master Clay, was a surprisingly sympathetic character at times - but only a few.

Overall I’d say this one is a 7/10. If you have time and it pops up, give it a read or a listen. It might make you ask some new questions, or give you some new perspective. It may open old wounds or bring back bad memories, too, so keep that in mind. But I’d say this story is worth it.

I finished reading the Catechism of the Catholic Church (United States) today. This is something I’ve been meaning to complete for a while, but had only consumed in byte-sized pieces before. I’m glad I took the time to get through the whole thing.

For reference, I was raised in the protestant tradition. In that tradition, we are given a certain view of Catholics and Catholicism that is, let’s say, less than charitable. As I grew older (and especially after I left the church and experienced the wider world of religion), I came to understand that this view isn’t based on reality. When I came back to the church, and adopted an ecumenical view, and even went so far as to attend some Catholic masses and to debate with Catholic friends, I began to suspect that those views were founded in ignorance, perhaps willful ignorance. About that time I discovered that the Catholic church publishes a Catechism - that is, a complete written set of beliefs, doctrines, dogma, and essential practices held by the Catholic church. I had consumed pieces of it here and there and referenced it a few times, but never consumed it in its entirety. Until now.

Here are some things that you WILL find in the Catechism, among others:

The marian doctrines (her immaculate conception; her perpetual virginity; her bodily ascension to heaven; and her reigning as the queen of heaven)

The doctrine of papal infalibility (the pope has the power to make unilateral declarations that are beyond contestation)

The role of the magisterium (the practice of interpreting scripture by those who are qualified to do so, and the tradition of handing that interpretation down for posterity)

The role of the popes, bishops, priests, and laymen, and how all of that relates to the priesthood of the believer

The function of the priest acting in the person of Christ in the execution of the liturgy and sacraments

The essential sacraments of the faith, why they are important, how they are organized and managed, and how you are to partake of them

Here are some things you will NOT find in the catechism, among others:

You can sin as much as you want as long as you go to confession (we are never free from the desire to sin as long as we are flesh, and confession is a necessary part of maintaining our relationship to God, but we must not continue to choose to live a life of sin, this is a rejection of Jesus’ sacrifice and an abuse of God’s mercy)

You have to worship Mary (though I admit as a protestant I find the marian doctrines icky and the line between veneration and worship is often very thin for many people, there is nothing here that says you are outside the church or unsaved if you don’t)

You can work your way into salvation (salvation is through grace, by faith, not works)

If you’re Christian but not catholic you’re going to hell (The only way to escape destruction is through Christ; The Catholic church recognizes that there are many people who have been brought up in their own traditions who have accepted Christ, whose baptisms are considered valid, who are living their lives for Christ, and who are therefore brothers and sisters in Christ, and whose salvation is not for the Catholic church to judge. Although you won’t be able to take communion with Catholics unless in an exceptional circumstance. Only those who directly rejected the Church - Zwingli, Luther, and the like - are guilty of a transgression; those who grew up in other traditions are innocent of any kind of transgression against the church.)

As a protestant, I think it’s essential that we understand where we came from. The fact is that for the first couple hundred years, there was one church. Then it began to splinter. Every church wants to say they are the original church, and I don’t think any church can lay claim to that anymore. I think every church needs to get over itself, come back to Christ, and find a way to reconcile with all of the others to form a single unified body again. And a big first step in that is to step outside of your own tradition and start trying to understand where other traditions are coming from. Understand what they ACTUALLY believe and what they ACTUALLY do - not just what you have always been told about them.

If you’re a protestant, you need to pick up the Catechism and read it. You need to read the early church fathers. You need to understand the traditions of your brothers and sisters in Christ and come to the table with them. Because Christ founded one church, and it’s up to all of us to seek to reunite with the other parts of the body. Christ is calling us to unity, not to division, and we will never get there if we don’t stop treating each other like heathens and heretics.

What Catholics actually believe is not some secret. You can go to the bookstore and buy it. It’s right next to the bible. It’s even in an audiobook. And it’s only 19 hours long. As protestants, we have no excuse for being ignorant of what our Catholic brothers and sisters believe.
